Creature Creation
***Note: exact dates may shift by a day or two depending upon flight schedules***
COURSE OVERVIEW
This workshop invites participants to create an animal-inspired textile sculpture under the guidance of textile sculptor Bryony Rose Jennings. Her approach, described as “building with fabric and sculpting with stitch”, encourages an intuitive and playful way of working, where character and presence emerge through the making process.
We begin by devising a simple pattern and creating a textile form, participants will then assemble and shape their creatures using stitch to bring the elements together, with an emphasis on poise and expression. Sculpting wire is utilised as needed to provide structural support and to lend balance, allowing each piece to develop organically.
Features and surface details are added through an open exploration of materials, combining textile elements with found objects and small, characterful details. Layers of curated fabrics are applied directly over the form, using texture, pattern and colour to enhance shape and personality.
Whilst it is good to arrive with an idea of the creature you wish to create it is helpful to remain open to change and development, allowing the work to be informed by the process and to evolve accordingly. Throughout the workshop, Bryony offers individual guidance, supporting each creature as it comes into being.
Participants are invited to bring their own treasured fabrics, haberdashery and small found objects to work with. Time-worn cloth, fragments of clothing, old linens or fabrics with a personal history can add depth and meaning to a piece. Buttons, beads, trinkets or natural objects may also find new purpose as features or details. Working with materials that already carry a story can enrich the making process, allowing each creature to become not only a sculpture, but a quiet holder of memory and association.
This workshop is suitable for those with some hand-sewing experience who enjoy slow, immersive making. Patience, curiosity and a willingness to experiment are key, with the most engaging results often emerging through play, chance and discovery.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a textile sculptor working with reclaimed and repurposed fabrics and haberdashery to create characterful, animal-inspired creatures. My work is shaped by an enduring awe for the natural world and our place within it, and by the long, storied relationship between humans and animals. Drawing on animal folklore, anthropomorphism and narrative, I prioritise personality and presence over realism, allowing each sculpture to develop its own distinct character.
Textiles have been central to my life for as long as I can remember. I have always been drawn to cloth that carries signs of use and life, and I continue to work with materials that hold quiet histories. I explored textiles at college and later incorporated fabric into my practice while studying for a degree in Silversmithing, where stitch began to sit alongside my explorations of 3D structures and metalwork.
My approach to textile sculpture is entirely self-taught. The techniques I use have evolved through experimentation, persistence and intuitive problem-solving, shaping a way of working that embraces imperfection, play and discovery. I value the unexpected moments that occur through making, believing that character often emerges through chance and adjustment, following intuition in response to the developing work.
Teaching is an important part of my practice. I am passionate about sharing the freedom of textile sculpture and encouraging individual expression, curiosity and a release from the idea of perfection, allowing each piece to reflect a unique way of seeing and making.
