Textile Collage
Mandy Pattullo is a textile artist based in Northumberland. Her practice refers to folk art and historical contexts, memory and domestic textiles and her techniques encompass fabric collage, deconstruction, drawing with stitch, applique and embroidery. Wherever possible she tries to incorporate a little bit of something old, or a tale to tell, within her work.
This is Mandy’s third visit to Studio Preniac and, as before, she will offer three very different workshops which will allow you use a variety of techniques and produce very different outcomes.
The first workshop focuses on a home or house that has been important to you. It might be the house you live in, the one you grew up in or a place you go on holiday. Working on to damask which Mandy will provide you will produce a stitched drawing of that place and perhaps bring in some collage elements. You might also incorporate words. Mandy will give you plenty of information about how to prepare for this before you arrive.
Mandy has always loved folk art from all cultures and in the second workshop you will work on to a base of antique quilt to create an appliqued and embroidered picture of a folk art inspired female. Mandy will show you her sources of inspiration and demonstrate her design process and applique technique. You will further decorate the surface with embroidery stitches.
Lastly you will make a “pocket” a fabric bag that women used to wear under ( and sometimes over) their clothing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It secured their valuables, mementos and sewing but also provided a canvas for artistic expression.. Mandy will provide the linen and binding for this and you will find the project really stretches your embroidery stitching which needs to be designed with a constrained shape. Patchwork elements may also be introduced.
Mandy is an enthusiastic teacher and looks forward to days filled with chat and laughter and because everything is hand stitched you will be able to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings of Studio Preniac and even work outside if you wish. Please bring your own sewing kit. A list of the fabrics you need to bring will be sent to the students before the course but Mandy will provide the foundation fabric for each project.
