Out of the Blue - Shibori and After Boro
During this course you will explore a variety of Shibori resist techniques using stitch, clamps, tied and pole wrapping to colour a range of fabrics using indigo dye. You will then go on to work with your dyed fabrics to produce small hand stitched pieces of work in the style of Japanese Boro.
Shibori means to wring or to twist, it is the Japanese word for tie dye and associated techniques. Using a range of simple hand stitching, tying with thread, tying in found items like stones, clamping with pegs and wrapping or threading a tube of fabric onto some drainpipe you will end up with a range of patterned cloth (and some plain too) to work with.
You will then go on to work with your dyed fabrics to make a piece or smaller pieces inspired by Japanese Boro. A Boro cloth can’t be copied, each piece is unique, a combination of piecing, collage/applique and Sashiko style stitching. Boro translates as rags; it is also called Boromono or Ranru. I like to refer to my own work inspired by these cloths or garments as After Boro!
Each piece of work you produce will be unique, just like Boro made from Shibori and you may wish to join smaller units together or incorporate it into another piece of work.
